The 1979 tornado outbreak will never be forgotten

4/9/2023 (Permalink)

tornado Here to help when severe weather damage happens

It's been 41 years since one of the most destructive tornadoes tore through the Texoma area killing 58 people. Three lives were lost here in Lawton, and more in the city of Wichita Falls back on April 10th, 1979.

The Red River Valley tornado outbreak of April 10, 1979 is one of the most significant tornado outbreaks that ever occurred in western north Texas and southern Oklahoma.

An F4 tornado struck Lawton, destroying over 116 structures, and damaging over 330 others. Unanchored homes were completely swept from their foundations.

1,740 people were injured, the most ever by an F4/EF4 tornado in United States history.

Overall, sixty tornadoes were confirmed throughout the duration of this storm, which lasted for over 38 hours.

Today, teams from SERVPRO of Lawton remain prepared for all types of severe weather, and are trained to help in the cleanup and restoration of damaged properties.

We all pray that we never see another system like this one. But if it happens, we're here to help.

Storm damage? There's a PRO for that.

When you think of storm damage, you may think of downed trees and power lines, and possibly roof damage.

Oftentimes, it's more than that. It's windows blown out, tree limbs falling on rooftops, or severe winds that tear off a portion of the roof.

That's what this homeowner discovered after returning home. An early morning storm partially destroyed her roof, causing wind driven rains to pour into the attic space, and eventually leading to the ceiling collapsing.

She called her insurance agent, who recommended SERVPRO of Lawton.

Our team quickly responded to the call, and immediately began boarding windows and tarping the roof to prevent further water damage.

We then removed the wet insulation and sheetrock from the attic space, and cleaned up the debris from the living area.

Next on the list was the need to pack out and move her property to our warehouse for proper cleaning, followed by the removal of all wet flooring and walls.

After seven days, the home was clean and dry, and the homeowner was working with her contractor to finish the restoration process.

Keeping your pets safe when storms happen

3/15/2023 (Permalink)

puppy playing with toy on carpet And if storm damage happens? Secure your pets, and call the trusted experts at SERVPRO of Lawton.

Your pets are an important member of your family, so they need to be included in your family’s emergency plan.

  • Have an evacuation plan for your pet. Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets inside. Know a safe place where you can take your pets before disasters and emergencies happen.
  • Develop a buddy system. Plan with neighbors, friends or relatives to make sure that someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so.
  • Have your pet microchipped. Make sure to keep your address and phone number up-to-date and include contact information for an emergency contact outside of your immediate area.

Just as you do with your family’s emergency supply kit, think first about the basics for survival, such as food and water. Have two kits, one larger kit if you are sheltering in place and one lightweight version for if you need to evacuate.  Review your kits regularly to ensure that their contents, especially foods and medicines, are fresh.

  • Food. Keep several days’ supply of food in an airtight, waterproof container.
  • Water. Store a water bowl and several days’ supply of water.
  • Medicine. Keep an extra supply of the medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container.
  • First aid kit. Talk to your veterinarian about what is most appropriate for your pet’s emergency medical needs.
  • Collar with ID tag and a harness or leash. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag. Have copies of your pet’s registration information and other relevant documents in a waterproof container and available electronically.
  • Traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier, ideally one for each pet.
  • Grooming items. Pet shampoo, conditioner and other items, in case your pet needs some cleaning up.
  • Sanitation needs. Include pet litter and litter box (if appropriate), newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach to provide for your pet’s sanitation needs.
  • A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated from your pet during an emergency, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in identifying your pet.
  • Familiar items. Put favorite toys, treats or bedding in your kit. Familiar items can help reduce stress for your pet.

Is your pet ready for disasters?

11/10/2022 (Permalink)

dog with dog tags Make plans to keep your pet safe when storm damage happens

You’ve prepared for disasters. You've checked your kits, and your insurance.

But is your pet ready?

During a disaster what’s good for you is good for your pet, so get them ready today.

If you leave your pets behind, they may be lost, injured – or worse. Never leave a pet chained outdoors. Plan options include:

  • Create a buddy system in case you’re not home. Ask a trusted neighbor to check on your animals.
  • Identify shelters. For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets.
    • Find pet friendly hotels along your evacuation route and keep a list in your pet’s emergency kit.
    • Locate boarding facilities or animal hospitals near your evacuation shelter.
    • Consider an out-of-town friend or relative
  • Locate a veterinarian or animal hospital in the area where you may be seeking temporary shelter, in case your pet needs medical care. Add the contact information to your emergency kit.
  • Have your pet microchipped and make sure that you not only keep your address and phone number up-to-date, but that you also include contact info for an emergency contact outside of your immediate area.
  • Call your local emergency management office, animal shelter or animal control office to get advice and information.
  • If you are unable to return to your home right away, you may need to board your pet. Find out where pet boarding facilities are located.
  • Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet's medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current.
  • If you have no alternative but to leave your pet at home, there are some precautions you must take, but remember that leaving your pet at home alone can place your animal in great danger!

The "inside" scoop on storm damage

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

fallen ceiling, debris covered floor Safety is our number one priority

There's a little bit of storm chaser in all of us.

We watch the weather, and we know the impact severe storms can have on our area.

After the storm, it may be tempting to drive through the neighborhood to see how much damage was done.

Downed tree limbs, power lines, and debris are typically seen, and can be hazardous to navigate.

Just as hazardous are collapsing ceilings due to roof damage from severe storms.

When our team of expertly trained technicians arrive onsite, we first inspect the area to ensure the safety of our team, as well as the safety of our customers.

Is the exterior free from hazards? Do the roof and windows need emergency tarping and boarding to prevent further damage? Are the electricity and water turned off?

And in this case, can we contain and demo the falling ceiling without injury to anyone onsite?

There's a lot that has to happen to restore your property after the storms have passed.

And we're here to help. With safety as our number one priority.

When storm damage means water damage

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

wet concrete Frozen pipes flood homes and businesses across Texoma.

National headlines in February drew attention to the fact that almost two-thirds of the United States was in the midst of an arctic blast of record breaking temperatures.

Many media images also showed record levels of snow fall, massive pileups on freeways, and entire areas closed to travel due to hazardous conditions.

Here in Southwest Oklahoma, the images weren't as dramatic, although the damage was certainly severe.

The frigid temperatures resulted in tens of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity, heat and water.

For some, the outages lasted almost a week.

For those properties without heat and running water, it was inevitable that broken pipes would lead to water damage.

As services came back on line, SERVPRO of Lawton professionals prepared to respond to hundreds of calls for help. And we in turn called in our national Disaster Response team to ensure our communities would be helped in a timely manner.

Storm damage isn't always dramatic pictures of severe damage. Sometimes it's more subtle, such as this recent storm.

12/7/2020 (Permalink)

ducting hanging from ceiling This storm led to water, fire, and smoke damage

Most of us think of storm damage as tarped roofs and flooded homes and businesses.

But sometimes, it's a trifecta of damages.

This home suffered severe roof damage during a recent storm. That led to water soaking through attic insulation, wall insulation, and major sheet rock damage.

The wet materials in the attic caused the ceiling to collapse. Which then caused the HVAC system to fall through the damaged ceiling, starting an electrical fire.

The fire and firefighting efforts led to smoke and soot damage throughout the home.

What started as storm damage quickly became water, fire, smoke and soot damage.

And the homeowners didn't know where to start the cleanup process, until they called SERVPRO of Lawton.

Our team of restoration experts walked them through the process, explaining each step that would be taken to ensure their property was properly restored.

It was a long process. But we were there for them every step of the way.

It could never happen to me

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

blue tarps on roof Severe storms create severe damage.

Today's forecasting technology warns us well in advance of upcoming storms.

Most of us get weather alerts on our smart phones, and we follow the local weather during storm season.

And we always think, "It could never happen to me."

But it does. Even with advanced warnings, and precautions taken, storm damage happens.

This customer shared her story while our team was onsite doing restoration.

They thought they were prepared for a storm, as they had so many times in past.

Until they heard loud, crashing noises in the middle of the night. Getting out of bed, they were surprised to find themselves knee deep in water, with more water pouring into the house from the ceiling and under the doors.

They went to the kitchen to ride out the storm and stayed on the countertops until the water began to recede.

It was a long night, and an even longer morning as they assessed the damage.

Not only was there severe damage to the home, most of the contents were also damaged or destroyed.

And they just kept saying to each other, "I never thought this would happen."

Storm damage does happen. When it does, call the #1 recommended restoration experts at SERVPRO of Lawton. We're here to help.

Storm damages church - again.

Water damaged wood flooring Removal of carpet shows damaged sub-floor

Did you know your odds of being hit by lightning over an 80-year lifespan are roughly 1 in 3000?

That's much better than the odds this church faced when two storm systems days apart damaged the property.

Torrential rains damaged the retention walls surrounding the church and led to massive amounts of water flooding into the property.

SERVPRO of Lawton professionals were called to quickly begin the extraction, cleaning and drying process.

While working to remove the mud and other debris, a second storm system formed and deposited another round of water into the building.

Our crews worked diligently to remove the standing water and began to demo damaged flooring and walls.

You can see the damage done in the chapel area in this photo. Removing the carpet showed severely damaged sub-floors, which also had to be removed.

All told, the congregation was without a home for just over a month as new decking and floor coverings were installed.

Two storms. One phone call to SERVPRO of Lawton.

Hidden water damage from roof leak

bare studs Wet insulation and sheet rock are removed to prevent secondary damage

Oftentimes storm damage goes unnoticed for days, until a homeowner sees water stains on the ceiling or walls.

That's when you call SERVPRO of Lawton.

Our team of highly trained experts can inspect and assess the damage, locate the source of the leak, provide emergency tarp up and boarding, and begin the restoration process.

This homeowner noticed staining on her ceiling and called us for an inspection.

Our technicians inspected the roof and noted a few damaged shingles. A look in the attic confirmed water was present and flowing down and inside the walls.

Our team began demolition to remove wet sheetrock and insulation, cleaned and treated the studs to prevent microbial growth, and established a drying protocol for the home.

Luckily, the damage wasn't too severe and we soon had this home restored to its preloss condition.

The perfect storm

9/21/2020 (Permalink)

burned out house Extreme damage leaves little to restore

We see a lot of damages here at SERVPRO of Lawton.

Sadly, this loss was a combination of multiple events that completely destroyed this home.

Truly, the perfect storm.

It began with severe thunderstorms in the area that produced heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and lightning.

In the midst of the storm, lightning struck this home, causing a fire. The residents were able to evacuate quickly and safely, and waited in their car for the fire department to extinguish the flames.

Once they were allowed back into the home to retrieve personal property, they discovered there wasn't much left.

The fire had totally destroyed the roof, causing the upper floor to collapse and allowing water to pour in.

Firefighting efforts had added to the water damage, leaving piles of wet debris.

The family gathered a few items and left the property.

When SERVPRO of Lawton received the call to help with restoration, we inspected the property and found it still wet and covered in mold.

We did provide an estimate to demo the property and safely remove the molded debris, and are awaiting instructions from the homeowner.

Record breaking hail destroys roof

9/20/2020 (Permalink)

holes in roof Now that's a lot of hail damage!

Well, hail. BIG hail. Almost five inches in diameter, after a record breaking storm in Texoma.

2020 has not been an easy year.

First, there was the pandemic and quarantine period. Then multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms rolled through Texoma.

This storm hit during the quarantine. When the homeowner called SERVPRO of Lawton for help, she first asked if we were open for business.

And we said YES! We're here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even during a pandemic quarantine.

Our team of expertly trained professionals ensured they had an extra supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which has become the new normal in response to all loss calls, and headed to the loss site.

They completed the initial inspection and began tarping the roof, boarding broken windows, and established a drying process.

The homeowner was very grateful to our team for responding quickly, using PPE, and securing her property.

But it doesn't look like a lot of damage!

Missing roof shingles Missing shingles leads to major water damage

It may not look like a lot of damage was done to this roof during a recent thunderstorm, but the damage found inside this home was severe.

The homeowner checked the roof after the storm, but didn't notice this small patch of shingles that were damaged.

Three days of rain followed the initial storm, and the water damage inside the home became very noticeable.

The sheetrocked ceilings began to pull loose in some areas, while other sheets fell down in the living area.

The sheetrock, insulation, and attic space were wet. And secondary damage (mold) had already formed.

The homeowner called their insurance agent, who recommended SERVPRO of Lawton.

One call and our team of expertly trained technicians arrived on site and inspected the property.

We tarped the damaged roof, and began cleaning up the debris in the living area. We then removed all wet materials and began the drying process.

Storm damage isn't always noticeable. Once discovered, call us at 580-699-2662. We're here to help.

Small wet spot reveals hidden storm damage

9/15/2020 (Permalink)

hole in ceiling wet insulation Wet insulation and sheetrock caused by storm damage

Damaging winds and heavy rain are common with thunderstorms in Texoma. If you live here, you've learned they can develop quickly and with little notice.

As was the case with this storm. Our weather forecasters called for sunshine all day, but were proven wrong when a fast moving line of thunderstorms struck the area.

Having spent the day at work, this homeowner was unaware her property had sustained damage.

Two days after the storm, she noticed a small wet spot on the ceiling. Concerned, she called her insurance agent, who recommended SERVPRO of Lawton.

Our highly trained technicians arrived onsite and inspected the visible damage. They then removed a portion of the ceiling where they found extensive water damage from a roof leak caused by storm damage.

Working with the adjuster, we created a restoration protocol and helped make this storm damage "Like it never even happened."

Severe weather damages property in Elgin, Oklahoma

4/27/2020 (Permalink)

red brick house blue tarp Severe thunderstorms brought hail and strong winds to this community.

Last week, severe thunderstorms blew into southwest Oklahoma, hitting one small community hard.

Elgin has a population of just over 2100 residents, the majority of whom had some storm damage.

Reports from our crews on the scene included roofs severely damaged, holes punched through skylights, downed tree and power lines, and many vehicles damaged or destroyed.

SERVPRO of Lawton began receiving calls around 2:00 am, while the storm was still raging.

Crews deployed to the site to survey the damage, and immediately began boarding up and tarping over blown out windows and damaged roofs.

Once all properties were secured, our teams began extracting water and establishing a drying protocol.

One of our customers took a video of our team as they finished securing the fourth property he had called us on. We shared that on Lasso - Texas and Louisiana page, so that other franchises could see just how grateful this customer was.

One call was all it took to get help.

Our teams worked through two rounds of severe weather that one day, and as we are wrapping up some of the job sites, a new forecast has come out.

For tomorrow. Again, for baseball sized hail.

We're ready. For whatever happens.

Roof damage from recent storm leaves a mess.

3/25/2020 (Permalink)

pile of wet clothes Hastily removed clothing creates a mess.

This customer did not realize her walk-in closet had received damage from a recent storm.

And trust us, she wasn't happy about it.

A storm had hit Friday night, and she and her husband thought their property was okay.

Until Sunday morning, when she was getting ready for church and saw drooping sheet rock and a mess all over her clothes.

She quickly began pulling items down and placing them on a chair, which actually led to some darker items bleeding onto the lighter fabrics.

It didn't take long for the husband to call SERVPRO of Lawton.

We quickly located the source of the leak (storm damage to the shingles), and while they contacted a roofer we began sorting clothing into restorable versus non-restorable sections.

With the help of garment boxes, our team was able to clear the closet so the drying and restoration process could begin.

Storm and water damage can cause a lot of additional damage.

Summer storms wreck havoc

bare metal studs 9 inches of rain closes mall for a week.

“Since Saturday, these Oklahoma counties have experienced flooding, severe storms, tornadoes and straight-line winds. Initial reports show damage in numerous communities including Apache, Cyril, Lawton, Maysville and Walters. Further damage assessments are ongoing.” - Oklahoma Governor Todd Lamb.

That was in June, 2016. Over 9 inches of rain fell in one morning in the Lawton area. And a total of nine counties were included in the state of emergency declaration.

SERVPRO of Lawton responded to this storm quickly in order to help the local retailers at the mall.

The flooding affected every store within the mall, some worse than others.

This sports store had water standing inches deep, until our SERVPRO of Lawton team arrived.

We immediately began extracting water, then began pulling up the damaged carpet. An inspection in their storage area revealed severely damaged drywall and wet insulation, which was removed.

After setting up air movers and dehumidifiers, we moved on the adjacent retails.

Overall, the cleanup from this storm took about a week. The impact on retailers and homeowners was heartbreaking.

SERVPRO of Lawton was honored to provide assistance to these retailers during their time of disaster.

chihuahua with bandana What's good for you is good for your pet. Be Prepared, Not Scared of storm season.

September is National Preparedness month. You've checked your kits, and your insurance.

Is your pet ready?
